Week 5
Antonio Gaudi - Concepts
Richard Rogers - Concepts
Exposure
Public space - architecture as public space held by buildings
Structural expressionism / "High Tech Architecture"
Lightness - endeavour to “enclose space at the least expense”. Based on close collaboration between architect and engineer. Eg. Millenium Dome, London, United Kingdom, 1996-1999
Transparency - glass and light, which together form the building and play with the relations between interior and exterior
Elegance
Legibility - buildings which express, in their very forms, the manner in which they have been constructed, what keeps them standing and how they function. A “legible”allows itself to be apprehended and decoded by the public.
Systems – (“high-tech style”) The aim of these constructive systems, which employ new technologies and modern materials, is prefabrication and the application of mass production to architecture which enables flexibility, efficiency, low production costs and construction site savings.
Environmental - Sustainable development. Priority given to renewable energies in the production and operation of its creations.
Antonio Gaudi - Concepts

- Symbolism of nature

- Sculptural
- Style - Catalan Modernisme / Gothic Revival / Art Nouveau
- Integration of crafts: ceramics, stained glass, wrought ironwork forging and carpentry.

- Use of ruled geometrical forms such as the hyperbolic paraboloid, the hyperboloid, the helicoid and the cone, which reflect the forms Gaudà found in nature.
- Materiality – glass, ceramics, mosaics, metal
- Light controlled, designed
- Colour - richness, vibrance

Although we encourage you to be imaginative and creative with your stair design, it's also important that they are functional. Especially since they are such an important part of the brief, and critical in this exercise for the transport of artwork between levels, functional stair design should be well considered. Above is an excerpt from the Building Code of Australia, which deals with sizes of stair treads ("goings") and risers.
